Real Estate Development Firm
San Francisco, CA
This forward-thinking CFO needed to physically lighten the bulkload of information his executive staff was carrying around when meeting with prospects and members of the financial community.
His goals were to:
- provide quick and accurate pocket financial data and effective memory joggers to his on-the-go staff
- put the quarterly financial reports in hand by a quick and firm deadline: the quarterly analyst and earnings announcement rehearsal
- have any piece of financial data he needed no more than 2 to 4 taps away
- leverage the popularity and portability of the staff's existing PalmPilot Professional and Palm III handhelds
- outsource the project to an established firm in order to keep his own team focused a lightening-fast close
He also wanted his senior finance managers to carry three additional monthly reports on their Palm Vs.
The Results:
In just three weeks, five e-mails, a $5,600 investment, and two 45-minute conference calls, Phase I of the project was complete and the CFO and executive staff were enjoying their pocket portfolio financials - an engaging new dimension to the CFO's quarterly analyst reports.
The project was delivered on time. The team is currently preparing for their Q3 earnings reports. They have learned that:
- intuitive pocket portfolio financials are effectively augmenting the assorted bits of financial data occasionally found on executive handhelds
- expanding the pocket portfolios to meet additional partner information requirements and to extend the reach to teams outside the US is simple
- company execs feel powerfully prepared and seem easier to get along with when they have key financial and project development data in their pocket
- the earnings meetings go smoother when the presenters and supporting staff have the information they need and are "on the same page"
- the leather company binder continues to grow more colorful and impressive but the pocket financials are more frequently found in a pocket and studied on an airplane
- the entire team feel smarter, more current, and very in sync
Elements of a Very Happy Ending:
- The executive staff is (quietly) applauding finance for producing some incredibly useful information tools
- the successful, forward-thinking CFO who started this project is calculating how he'll spend his bonus
- IS is busy designing an integrated solution that will expand the pocket portfolio concept to improve information flow in several other areas within the company in Q2 of the Year 2000.
